Little Island with big balls
So probably when I start to write now a lot of people will not understand me. They either have never been to Malta or they still live on this island. But I think that I know some people, who will exactly know to what I´m referring to now.
Ok have a look at the following bullet points and check if you are also tagged
- weather apps
Meanwhile most of us have a smart phone. And with at least one weather app on it. Well, I tagged around eight cities or so. The first one is my hometown and then immediately as the second one comes Sliema …….
- Music
Before your long-stay you seriously never fancy charts music or latin music too much. It was ok but nothing to freak out. Hanging out now in a club and hearing a chart song , you probably start to smile like an idiot , have 100 memories coming up , dance a bit hyperactive and shout “ That’s from pv, That’s from pv “
This brings us directly to the next point ….
- Shots
Dancing to Paceville music , brings you directly to the mood of having some shots. Totally in your malta deja- vue you jump to the bar to get a tray of shots…….
Tjaaaaaa, welcome to real life ! Forget your 10 Euros ! Put the purse out of your bag again
- flags
Half red, Half white and a grey cross in the white part. The Maltese flag. You probably have at least one at home.
- maltese accent
“ If I had a british accent , I´d never shut up” Whoever was writing this definitly never heard a Maltese speaking . Spending your holiday in an other english speaking country, makes you wondering which kind of language its inhabitants are speaking. You don´t really understand them , which makes you so much happier as you finally meet a maltese abroad and can listen to his voice. In the end someone with a proper english ;)
- public holidays
Of course you know when you don´t need to work and when you have bank holidays, but you can also say easily when the Maltese aren´t working
- history
Maltese independence day – no problem, day of the repupilc- no problem, results of the maltese vote – no problem , who built up Valletta – no problem
The history of your own country – mmmmmh let me google quick sth
“ Lovely day in Comino”; “ Crazy night out in Paceville”; “ Shall I go to Exiles or shall I take the bus for beaching at Rivera beach”; “ Oh damn, it´s so hot here”
How much do we hate this comments from our “friends” , who are still in Malta. NOBODY is interested in your daily life routine there !! ;)
Note to myself: Don´t forget to update your maltese facebook album in a few weeks
- language
You came to Malta for studying English, you lived there and worked there. Your English is more or less acceptable. You got used to this language. But you start to realise that there are some words in your vocabulary , which seems for you like a part of the English language and you use them automatically. But ejja, bomba or mella are not part of the English language !!!
- tan
Being in the bathroom and checking yourself in the mirror, realising that you looked much more better when you were still able to beach at Exiles.
- visting people
It wasn´t your plan to go on holiday to Malta. You booked flights around Europe for visting friends or going together with them somewhere. But literally everyone of them has something to deal with Malta. This bloody little island connected you all. It´s unbelievable. Unbelievable awesome !
- inviting people
Well and if you don´t have enough money to travel anymore , you simply start to invite them to your place to get a bit of this feeling again.
- convincing people
Your friends are searching for a new holiday destination or want to study english. They must go to Malta. You don´t give them a other chance and you are able in two seconds to give them a looooong list of pros for the rock. And as soon as they are asking for your help or your advice , you feel very proud.
- meeting people
No matter how crazy, freaky, stupid or ugly a stranger is. As soon as you hear that he or she knows Malta, was there already and liked it ……. BOOM new friend
- jewellery
There are some people who even wear the maltese cross as a necklace. Very funny when you meet strangers who never heard from Malta. They think you are a part of a sect
- checking flights
You are planning your holiday to a completely other destination, but just out of curiousity you check how much a flight to Malta would be
Just a few aspects how your daily life can be affected after a long stay in Malta ;)
Next time I give you an introduction into the world-wide influence of the rock

The last two years i litlerally spend more time in Malta then in my own country. I celebrated farewells like other people a normal Friday night and after more or less 8 weeks at home I had already maltese ground under my feet. But this ended 2013 . It should not sound sad or sth like that. But it felt a bit like a chapter closed. Of course, I still love Malta and the people there from the bottom of my heart and there is not a single day, where I´m not thinking about this teeny weeny place in the Mediterranean sea , with which I fall so much in love. I will be also back in 3 weeks ;)
But I think I can say, that I moved on. I travelled a lot this year. Africa, Italy, Uk, Spain and the list for 2014 is already in my mind. I realised that there is so much to do and to see and to discover , which makes me feel a bit itchy to check already some new flights….
I started this blog last year in summer for telling and showing people the beauty of Malta. What this place has to give and why you should definitly live there for a while. As my life changed a bit, I think it is also time to change this blog a bit. First of all it´s high time to write finally also in English ( as I have to excuse already my not really perfect English) and the second thing is to change the point of view of the writer. I´m not living in Malta anymore, but I want to show you now how much the rock can affect your daily life, where you can find the maltese influence and how you survive without your daily maltese dosis
