Grazzi Malta
It´s been a
while ago that I was actually really
writing about Malta. But, if I´m honest, I didn´t know what to tell and as I
had the chance to discover the beauty of the Uk, Malta got a bit forgotten.
However, I
just got back from my little holiday on the rock.To be honest, before I entered
the plane a few days ago, I had the feeling that the chapter ´Malta´is gonna
close soon. I didn´t really feel attached anymore and my level of excitement
wasn´t too big either.Five days
later….. I didn´t want to leave anymore.
After
almost three years discovering Malta , I won´t write anymore about the tourist
attractions. It´s time to go deeper. Forget the tourist guides, googel pages
and whatever. Let´s start to understand and experience feelings, life styles,
opinions and local traditions.
So after
these few days on the island, I asked myself : What´s that thing ,which keeps
people returning all the time ? I mean, if we look at it neutral , it´s just
316 km² in the Mediteranean Sea with the same sunny climate like almost
everywhere in southern Europe. And even tough people travel all around the
world, which gives them so much to see, they still come back to Malta and
arrive at the airport with the brightest smile on earth. So….. what is it ??
When I did
my first step out of the plane on maltese ground , I got a bit disappointed at
the first moment. Maybe it´s just me, but when I travel I´m full of excitement.
I´m nervous , happy and normally totally out of control. I can´t wait to be out
of the terminal building and finally being in the bus to “Somewhere”. Well,
none of these feelings happened to me , when I arrived at the beginning in
Malta. All was so normal…usual … routine …. No travel injection. Took me some time
to actually realise it I came “home”. Oooooh,
well played, Malta. Well played. Cheeky bastard.
Everyone
has his own personal reasons to take a plane to Malta. I actually just have
two. Cross out the tourist attractions, cross out Paceville ( WTF was I doing there for so long :D ) , cross out the churches and all these things.
Have a look at the maltese nature and scenery
. Pay attention to different bays, beaches, cliffs, small islands around, the
amazing blue and clear water. Open your eyes for untouched places on the
country side or directly at the coast line. Even though Malta is so small, it
gives you at each compass point a different landscape. The west: with high
cliffs and a rough sea , the north east coastline: flat containing sandy
beaches and the biggest cities of the state, the south: a bit meager but with
beautiful fisher villages , and the center : the countryside with little hills.
Someone , who hasn´t been to Malta yet, would say : “ Yeaaah , and???. Nothing
special.” Of course it´s nothing
speacil, but always bear in mind that we speak here about a place which is
pretty pretty small. Other countries also offer that. No doubts . But show your
respect and be impressed, that ALL what you want and expect fits perfectly on
our little rock. I guess , I have already 100 photos of each stone of the
maltese islands and call me insane, but I´m still fascinated by the beauty of
the island.
My other
reason are the people itself. Ok, it is changing a bit as my friends and also
me are moving more and more. But if I sum up my time in Malta, I can say that I
met amazing people there. I made friends with wonderful people from all over
the world. We went together through stories and adventures and had an awesome
time. Even tough we don´t live anymore together and are all spread over the
whole world , we still feel somehow connected when it comes to Malta. Of course
, it´s impossible to keep on weekly basis in contact . But that doesn´t matter
at all as your ´maltese family ´knows that you won´t forget them .
I went recently to London , where I met two friends
of mine. Both I got to know in Malta. And here the same thing happened as a
year ago in Madrid or when I got visitors in Germany.. You haven´t seen them
for months, maybe already for a year. But you hug them, squeeze them and it´s
immediately so natural and normal to hang out with them. It doesn´t matter
which location or whatever, it just feels like you haven´t seen them for a
week. I´m not sure, if you understand what I´m trying to say and it´s not very
easy to describe. But for me it was or is
something very special, builing up a friendship like this , which also
last over big distances and in the end always trace back to 316 km² of a rock.
