Grazzi Malta

It´s been a while ago  that I was actually really writing about Malta. But, if I´m honest, I didn´t know what to tell and as I had the chance to discover the beauty of the Uk, Malta got a bit forgotten.
However, I just got back from my little holiday on the rock.To be honest, before I entered the plane a few days ago, I had the feeling that the chapter ´Malta´is gonna close soon. I didn´t really feel attached anymore and my level of excitement wasn´t too big either.Five days later….. I didn´t want to leave anymore.

After almost three years discovering Malta , I won´t write anymore about the tourist attractions. It´s time to go deeper. Forget the tourist guides, googel pages and whatever. Let´s start to understand and experience feelings, life styles, opinions and local traditions.

So after these few days on the island, I asked myself : What´s that thing ,which keeps people returning all the time ? I mean, if we look at it neutral , it´s just 316 km² in the Mediteranean Sea with the same sunny climate like almost everywhere in southern Europe. And even tough people travel all around the world, which gives them so much to see, they still come back to Malta and arrive at the airport with the brightest smile on earth. So….. what is it ??

When I did my first step out of the plane on maltese ground , I got a bit disappointed at the first moment. Maybe it´s just me, but when I travel I´m full of excitement. I´m nervous , happy and normally totally out of control. I can´t wait to be out of the terminal building and finally being in the bus to “Somewhere”. Well, none of these feelings happened to me , when I arrived at the beginning in Malta. All was so normal…usual … routine …. No travel injection. Took me some time to actually  realise it I came “home”. Oooooh, well played, Malta. Well played. Cheeky bastard.

Everyone has his own personal reasons to take a plane to Malta. I actually just have two. Cross out the tourist attractions, cross out Paceville ( WTF was I doing there for so long :D ) , cross out the churches and all these things.
Have a look at the maltese nature and scenery . Pay attention to different bays, beaches, cliffs, small islands around, the amazing blue and clear water. Open your eyes for untouched places on the country side or directly at the coast line. Even though Malta is so small, it gives you at each compass point a different landscape. The west: with high cliffs and a rough sea , the north east coastline: flat containing sandy beaches and the biggest cities of the state, the south: a bit meager but with beautiful fisher villages , and the center : the countryside with little hills. Someone , who hasn´t been to Malta yet, would say : “ Yeaaah , and???. Nothing special.”  Of course it´s nothing speacil, but always bear in mind that we speak here about a place which is pretty pretty small. Other countries also offer that. No doubts . But show your respect and be impressed, that ALL what you want and expect fits perfectly on our little rock. I guess , I have already 100 photos of each stone of the maltese islands and call me insane, but I´m still fascinated by the beauty of the island.

My other reason are the people itself. Ok, it is changing a bit as my friends and also me are moving more and more. But if I sum up my time in Malta, I can say that I met amazing people there. I made friends with wonderful people from all over the world. We went together through stories and adventures and had an awesome time. Even tough we don´t live anymore together and are all spread over the whole world , we still feel somehow connected when it comes to Malta. Of course , it´s impossible to keep on weekly basis in contact . But that doesn´t matter at all as your ´maltese family ´knows that you won´t forget them .
I went recently to London , where I met two friends of mine. Both I got to know in Malta. And here the same thing happened as a year ago in Madrid or when I got visitors in Germany.. You haven´t seen them for months, maybe already for a year. But you hug them, squeeze them and it´s immediately so natural and normal to hang out with them. It doesn´t matter which location or whatever, it just feels like you haven´t seen them for a week. I´m not sure, if you understand what I´m trying to say and it´s not very easy to describe. But for me it was or is  something very special, builing up a friendship like this , which also last over big distances and in the end always trace back to 316 km² of a rock.

Little Island with big balls

So probably when I start to write now a lot of people will not understand me. They either have never been to Malta or they still live on this island. But I think that I know some people, who will exactly know to what I´m referring to now.

Ok have a look at the following bullet points and check if you are also tagged

-    weather apps

Meanwhile most of us have a smart phone. And with at least one weather app on it. Well, I tagged around eight cities or so. The first one is my hometown and then immediately as the second one comes Sliema …….

-    Music

Before your long-stay you seriously never fancy charts music or latin music too much. It was ok but nothing to freak out. Hanging out now in a club and hearing a chart song , you probably start to smile like an idiot , have 100 memories coming up , dance a bit hyperactive and shout “ That’s from pv, That’s from pv “
This brings us directly to the next point ….

-    Shots

Dancing to Paceville music , brings you directly to the mood of having some shots. Totally in your malta deja- vue you jump to the bar to get a tray of shots…….
Tjaaaaaa, welcome to real life ! Forget your 10 Euros ! Put the purse out of your bag again

-    flags

Half red, Half white and  a grey cross in the white part. The Maltese flag. You probably have at least one at home.

-    maltese accent

“ If I had a british accent , I´d never shut up”  Whoever was writing this definitly never heard a Maltese speaking . Spending your holiday in an other english speaking country, makes you wondering which kind of language its inhabitants are speaking. You don´t really understand them , which makes you so much happier as you finally  meet a maltese abroad and can listen to his voice. In the end someone with a proper english ;)

-    public holidays

Of course you know when you don´t need to work and when you have bank holidays, but you can also say easily when the Maltese aren´t working

-    history

Maltese independence day – no problem, day of the repupilc- no problem, results of the maltese vote – no problem , who built up Valletta – no problem
The history of your own country – mmmmmh let me google quick sth

-    facebook

“ Lovely day in Comino”; “ Crazy night out in Paceville”; “ Shall I go to Exiles or shall I take the bus for beaching at Rivera beach”; “ Oh damn, it´s so hot here”
How much do we hate this comments from our “friends” , who are still in Malta. NOBODY  is interested in your daily life routine there !! ;)

Note to myself: Don´t forget to update your maltese facebook album in a few weeks

-    language

You came to Malta for studying English, you lived there and worked there. Your English is more or less acceptable. You got used to this language. But you start to realise that there are some words in your vocabulary , which seems for you like a part of the English language and you use them automatically. But  ejja, bomba or mella are not part of the English language !!!

-    tan

Being in the bathroom and checking yourself in the mirror, realising that you looked much more better when you were still able to beach at Exiles.

-    visting people

It wasn´t your plan to go on holiday to Malta. You booked flights around Europe for visting friends or going together with them somewhere. But literally everyone of them has something to deal with Malta. This bloody little island connected you all. It´s unbelievable. Unbelievable awesome !

-    inviting people

Well and if you don´t have enough money to travel anymore , you simply start to invite them to your place to get a bit of this feeling again.

-    convincing  people

Your friends are searching for a new holiday destination or want to study english. They must go to Malta. You don´t give them a other chance and you are able in two seconds to give them a looooong list of pros for the rock. And as soon as they are asking for your help or your advice , you feel very proud.

-    meeting people

No matter how crazy, freaky, stupid or ugly a stranger is. As soon as you hear that he or she knows Malta, was there already and liked it ……. BOOM new friend

-    jewellery

There are some people who even wear the maltese cross as a necklace. Very funny when you meet strangers who never heard from Malta. They think you are a part of a sect

-    checking flights

You are planning your holiday to a completely other destination, but just out of curiousity you check how much a flight to Malta would be

Just a few aspects how your daily life can be affected after a long stay in Malta ;)

Next time I give you an introduction into  the world-wide influence of the rock
